New eco-friendly credit card launched

Credit cards The smart car manufacturer has introduced an environmentally-friendly credit card, designed to neutralize the effects of CO2 for motorists.

Rather than building points or sending cash off to charities, the new smart credit card has paired up with Woodland Trust where a special initiative has been arranged.

Every activation of a new "smart card" will see five new trees planted by Woodland Trust, which would offset a fortwo coupe car model's emissions for 6,000 miles.

The fortwo coupe has the lowest CO2 emissions in the UK.

Woodland Trust's director for development Karl Mitchell said: "While the answer to climate change is cutting our carbon emissions, we recognise that most people can't get to zero, so planting trees is a helpful way to offset those residual emissions."

The plastic card itself is also "green", being made with PETG, which does not have many of the "highly-toxic" chemicals found in other credit cards made with PVC.

Sam Bridger, head of marketing for smart, said: "The smart credit card complements our customers' commitment to the environment and I am delighted that the Woodland Trust has agreed to be our partner on this venture.

"We hope to plant over 5,000 trees before the end of 2007 as a result of launching this unique initiative."
