Uninsured drivers warned

Uninsured motorists should take note of new research revealing that many friends and relatives would think nothing of "grassing" them up to the Police.A study by Churchill Car Insurance has found that 29 per cent of motorists would inform the authorities if they found out a driver was uninsured, even if they were a friend or family member.
Some 87 per cent of those canvassed also said that they would refuse to get in the car if they knew an uninsured driver was behind the wheel.
Frances Browning, a spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, said that many motorists believe that the current £200 penalty for driving while uninsured is too low.
He said that 35 per cent of those asked believe the fine should be increased to at least £1,000, "putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence – a considerably less serious offence".
Some four in five honest drivers believe that uninsured motorists are more likely to commit other crimes.
