Do you Insure Your Home Contents and Your Spouse?

Insurance may not be the most interesting of subjects but it is vital that you buy insurance to cover your needs. That means your spouse as well as such as your home contents, car and pets.

New research by Zurich reveals that over a third of people will insure the contents of their homes before they take out life insurance cover.
The research is part of Zurich’s ‘Big Decisions’ study which looks at decision-making habits in the UK.
Not only do many put their valuables before their spouses, only just over one in three people actually have life insurance even though life cover is perceived to be the most important type of insurance when compared to building, car, travel and home contents cover.
Of those surveyed:
- 73% have home contents insurance
- 67% have comprehensive car insurance
- 58% have building insurance
- 38% of people have life assurance
- 33% of people have travel insurance
Phil Brown, Zurich’s Head of Protection and Underwriting says: “Without life insurance, the devastation felt when a loved one dies can closely be followed by financial devastation when the family are unable to afford to live their current lifestyle. For many, selling a family home soon after the death of spouse is a harsh reality.”
When buying insurance, most people decide to shop around to find the best cover, nearly half say they shop around for the cheapest cover and 16% always go for a brand they trust.
MoneyHighStreet comments: “Not only are luxuries such as a summer holiday and a satellite TV being put ahead of buying life insurance, clearly so too are other types of insurance.
“With household budgets stretched, one of the first things cut by many is insurance. Some insurance, such as buildings or car insurance is essential. Others range from highly desirable to perhaps just desirable or nice to have.
“Life insurance, contents, pet and travel insurance all, we feel, fit in the highly desirable category – they will give you peace of mind and could save you a fortune.
