Diners are going to be able to trial a new free iPhone app from Pizza Express that will allow them to pay directly for their meals.

iPhone app Pizza ExpressThe new free iPhone app offers diners the opportunity to simply tap away on their smartphone and pay for their Pizza Express meal – meaning there will be no need to catch the attention of a waiter, wait for a bill to be delivered and to then pay it.

As soon as they’ve paid the customer will be sent an electronic confirmation to confirm that they have paid rather than get a receipt. At the same time the restaurant’s till will also be sent a message, so the management knows that the customer is not “doing a runner” without settling.

This marks another step in the functionality available via a smartphone, albeit this particular service will, at least initially, only be available for the iPhone.

The app will also allow users to find and book a table, look at menus and store their special offers and receipts. It can be downloaded from the Apple app store.

The payment functionality is being provided in conjunction with PayPal and will be available at 370 Pizza Express outlets where the company is also rolling out free wifi access.

Cameron McLean, general manager of merchant services at PayPal said: “The line between the high street and the online world is blurring, and innovative brands like PizzaExpress recognise that payment by mobile makes a great service even better.”

MoneyHighStreet comments: “This will no doubt be an iPhone app that many pizza lovers will want to try. It further strengthens the value of the smartphone and no doubt we’ll be seeing many more such apps available from other restaurants in the near future – both for the Android as well as the iPhone market.”
