Lady Driver Insurance
Lady's car insurance is a simple concept that basically entails car insurance specifically designed for women. It is the same as normal car insurance however you must be female to be entitled to it.
Within the car insurance market a number of insurers now specialise in niche areas, for example over 50 car insurance, or those driving 4*4 vehicles. Equally there are a growing number of insurance companies that cater specifically for female car drivers.
It is statistically accepted that overall women are more careful drivers than men, are involved in fewer serious accidents, have fewer driving convictions and make fewer claims. This means that by having a female only insurance policy the premium costs can be lower as there is no subsidising of the larger volume and size of claims made by men.
One of the first companies to start this trend was Sheila's Wheels founded in 1995. It was established by the Esure Insurance Company on the back of an EU Gender Directive. This would have made insurers treat both sexes the same and not take into account the difference in policy that is clearly required. But this directive was dismissed thus allowing insurance companies, at least for the time being, to take gender into account when devising their car policies and setting their car insurance prices.
Other companies such as Diamond (a trading name of EUI Ltd, part of the Admiral Group) and MORE TH>N provide specific female car insurance.
In addition to a competitive price, benefits offered by companies that have female specific car insurance policies often include handbag cover. This covers against the loss or theft of valuables that women often carry around with them in their handbags; this kind of cover often goes up to around £300 instead of around £100 for contents under a non-gender specific insurance policy. Also they usually provide access to repairers specifically trained to use female-friendly procedures.
