Where Do You Hide Your House Keys?

According to new research, around 20% of Brits hide house keys within 10 feet of their front door and yet ‘lost’ house keys can also lead to secondary car thefts.

Home Insuranceesure home insurance research reveals the most common hiding place for house keys is beneath a garden rock with, followed by plant pots, underneath door mats and even under car tyres.

Whilst thousands of Brits have their home or car keys stolen every year(1), many fail to change their locks afterwards.  Others also don’t bother to change their locks after losing a set of house keys, even when a number admit to keeping an address tag on them.

According to AA Insurance, car thieves are increasingly stealing car keys from people’s homes, with over 50 cars stolen every day in the UK following a burglary.

Nikki Sellers, Head of home insurance at esure, comments: “Changing locks when moving house or after losing keys can be a hassle, but it’s an investment that will lead to greater peace of mind and help avoid a potentially unpleasant experience.

“Labelling keys is a serious security risk – it’s also the reason why we have so many mystery keys”

The research showed that the average Brit owns or carries a total of nine keys but has no idea what at least three of them are for!

(1) In 2008/2009, there were 19,400 car keys stolen during burglaries and 2,700 car keys stolen during personal robberies.
