The LS Lowry painting The Football Match had not been seen in public for nearly 20 years but at auction at Christies last week it sold for a record £5.6 million.
A keen supporter of Manchester City, Lowry painted The Football match in 1949.
The auction estimated price was £4.5 million but this was quickly surpassed to reach £5.6m, a record for a Lowry at auction.
Another Lowry piece, called ‘Coronation Street’ which inspired the ITV soap Coronation Street, was also at auction this week and sold for £445,250, including the buyer’s premium.
Lowry was very famously celebrated in the chart hit ‘Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs’ by Brian and Michael in 1978.
MoneyHighStreet.com comment: Whilst you may not have a Lowry painting on your wall at home, do you have other valuable art work? It’s easy to overlook valuable items or perhaps collections you have when it comes to determining your insurance requirements.
You may know that an item has great sentimental value but what ‘pounds and pence’ value does it have?
Even if you have a trusted, up to date valuation, are you sure you have the best insurance cover in place for it – if you are in any doubt it could be a good time to get advice from an insurance broker. They are there to advise you and can help ensure you get the cover you need.
