Lloyds TSB has launched its 2009 Student Account with a great package for those starting university this autumn.

Lloyds Student AccountThe Student Account has an exclusive banking relationship with the NUS, offering students a free NUS Extra Card which provides discounts at over 60 retailers – including Amazon, Play.com, Ticketmaster and even McDonalds.

There is an interest free overdraft facility. This is tiered in the first year, providing up to a £1,500 limit interest-free.

There’s a free Mobile Banking Package which includes text alerts when the account is reaching planned or unplanned overdraft limits.

It also allows the account balance to be checked via mobile phone and for money to be transferred between eligible Lloyds TSB accounts.

The Mobile Banking Package usually has a charge of £2.50 but it will be free until 2010 for students taking out the special Student Account 2009 package.

The account comes with Lloyds TSB Internet and Telephone Banking services and a Lloyds TSB Visa debit card.

Lloyds also offer an Islamic Student Account which meets the requirements of Islamic law (Shariah). To ensure it is compliant, the account has the approval of a board of Islamic scholars.

Other benefits offered by the Student Account package include:

  • Save money on driving lessons with the AA
  • Free eMusic downloads – up to 35 for first time users of eMusic
  • Free one year’s YHA membership

The banks are offering some attractive packages to entice students to take out a current account with them.

As well as the launch of the Lloyds TSB Student Account, NatWest launched their Student package recently.

It’s clearly going to pay to check around for the best package to meet individual needs, in particular to take advantage of the most appropriate benefits on offer.
