School holiday package holidays cost parents an average of 25% more.

Holiday curency cardsAccording to research from Abbey Credit Cards, foreign package holidays carry an average cost increase of 25%.

These increased holiday costs can be seen in mid-August, when all schools are on holiday, compared to mid-July when most schools still haven’t broken up for summer.

Portugal sees a massive increase of 40% in this period, whilst Spain sees a more modest 6% increase.

Even if staying in the UK the holiday costs are also increased in this period.

As Callum Gibson, Head of Credit Cards at Abbey, pointed out ‘those looking to make savings by staying in the UK and avoiding the poor Euro exchange rate are unlikely to be any better off, with UK resorts increasing their prices by an average of 39% during the same period.’

When going on holiday it is important to consider the extra costs involved, travel insurance and foreign currency holiday money for example.

Getting the best deal holiday money is important. You can opt to use your credit card or debit card, but generally these incur significant costs.

However, Abbey has reintroduced it Abbey Zero card which uniquely offers no cash advance fee and no foreign exchange fee.

Another option is to use a prepaid currency card, such as offered by CaxtonFX, FairFX, Lloyds TSB or the Post Office for example.
