Postal strike is not an excuse for driving without car insurance

With the Royal Mail national postal strike underway no doubt there will be huge disruption but be aware that driving without car insurance and using the excuse of the postal strike will not be accepted. Here’s some insurance advice to ensure you keep covered.

Car insuranceThe ABI (Association of British Insurers) have issued insurance advice and insurers have plans in place to ensure that customers remain insured.

Critically if you are concerned about your insurance make sure you contact your insurer.

If such as your car or home insurance is due for renewal, insurers usually send out renewal terms around 21 days before the renewal date.

If these haven’t arrived, contact your insurer and they may be able to send the details by alternative means, such as email or fax.

Regardless of the postal strike, your insurance will still expire on the date given. You must make sure you either renew or get alternative insurance in place or you will not be covered.

If your car insurance is due for renewal you must drive whilst uninsured – the postal strike will not be accepted as an excuse by Police, you will still be deemed to be breaking the law.

If you need to renew your road tax, the application requires proof that car insurance is in place.

If you use the online road tax service, it automatically checks you have car insurance and you don’t have to have the actual insurance certificate.

Insurers will be doing their bit to help minimise disruption.

They will be using email, telephone and fax wherever possible and encouraging customers to pay by credit or debit card, direct debit or online rather than by sending cheques.

They will also be using bank transfer payments for paying claims, and any other payments, rather than posting cheques.
