Some 25% of pet owners plan to holiday in the UK so they can take their pet with them, but with a PETS passport and good pet insurance, dogs and cats can holiday in the EU with you.
PETS is the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme which means dogs and cars can travel within the EU with you.
You can buy pet insurance online from such as Tesco Finance, that offers extra overseas cover which will
- helps towards quarantine costs if your pet falls ill whilst away
- cover if your pet’s passport is lost
- provide holiday cancellation cover if your pet is ill and can’t travel.
Going off on holiday with your pet does require some planning though, including making sure your pet
- has blood tests at vet
- has treatment against tapeworm and ticks
- is up to date with vaccinations, including rabies
- is microchipped
- has an up to date PETS passport.
You also need to check any specific import requirements for your destination.
As Rachel Cutler, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, says ‘As a nation of animal lovers, it is telling that a quarter of us organise our holidays around our pets. We’ve provided cover because our customers have told us they would like to share their holiday experience with their pets.’
So, with some planning, a passport and good pet insurance cover, you really can venture off on holiday with your beloved pet.

I know that sometimes insurance premiums can include or exclude certain things so it is best to evaluate several types of companies
Some main questions to ask..
1. Is my Pet too old to get insured
2. Can I insure my puppy?
3. Can I insure my pet if there is a Pre-existing Condition?
4. Can I take my pet to any vet?
5. Are wellness visits covered under some plans?
6. What does each incident mean when it pertains to my deductible?
7. Why do companies exclude certain illnesses or items on a policy?
