New research has revealed that O2 offers the best broadband services in the UK.

Consumer website moneysupermarket.com has published the results of its first ever quarterly speed test for broadband services in the UK and revealed that O2 customers signed up to an eight megabyte per second (Mbps) deal receive the best speeds in the country.

The study showed that these customers typically enjoy a connection that equals 5.39 Mb per second. Other providers that were proved to be performing well included Sky at 3.59 Mb per second.

Overall, the research indicated that the average broadband speed in the country was just 2.97 Mb per second and that 25 per cent believe they need a better connection to facilitate their internet habits.

"O2 has sped its way to the top of the broadband league offering a great package," commented Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com.

"However broadband in Britain is still lagging, especially when the second best connection is only half the advertised speed."

"Ofcom''s code of practice can''t come into force soon enough, although it''s hard to see why the code is voluntary as advertised speeds are a mile away from reality."
