Mobile phone sales down but smartphone sales on the rise

Mobile phone sales were down nearly 9% in the first quarter of 2009, in contrast smartphone sales were up nearly 13%.

Smartphone NokiaSome 36 million smartphones were sold in Q1 2009 according to Gartner.

Nokia had a 41% share, selling 15 million units, followed by Research in Motion (Blackberry), Apple (iPhone and iPod Touch), HTC (G1) and Fujitsu.

A smartphone is basically a mobile phone with more advanced functionality.

It may have features such as email, internet, a built-in keyboard, touch screen, a built-in camera or software to play music or view video clips.

There are numerous smartphones available, for example the BlackBerry, iPhone and iPod Touch, HTC’s G1 to name a few. Of course there’s the soon to be released Nokia N97 too.

It seems that smartphone sales are set to continue their rise, at the expense of the traditional mobile phone.
