John Lewis saw an all time record for online weekly sales last week with sales surpassing their previous record by £500,000. Biscuit the Dog was a particular hit but there was also high demand for other toys, home electronics, christmas gifts and christmas decorations.

John Lewis believes it has continued customer confidence in their pricing policy through the quick passing on of the 2.5% VAT reduction and their ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ price promise. This has been heavily promoted over the last few days as they lowered the prices of selected items across a number of ranges ‘in response to a competitors event’.

Nat Wakely, John Lewis Director of Selling Operations says ‘This week’s stronger sales have borne out our belief that John Lewis’ strong and innovative Christmas products, customer service and price matching will ensure our continued position as a market leader over the festive period. The next two weeks are absolutely crucial for us and all high street retailers but we are confident that the upward sales trend will continue.’

As at many retailers, to try and entice shoppers to spend there are currently a number of special offers at John Lewis, including 25% off selected luxury hampers as well as 20% off selected watches, Ted Baker and Filofax products.

As already reported on MoneyHighStreet, today is predicted to be ‘Mega Monday’ for cards. It is expected that shoppers will be spending millions online today, making it the busiest internet shopping day of the year. At the peak, shoppers are expected to be spending at a rate of £16,000 per second.

David Smith, director of operations at IMRG, the internet retail trade body, said ‘The internet has become the best place for shoppers looking to make the most out of their squeezed spending resources and find the best prices and products for presents this Chistmas. Online has definitely come of age this Christmas.’
