Clever motorists are finding ways to cut their car costs without taking risks with their car insurance.

Car insuranceResearch by eco car insurance provider ibuyeco has found that many UK motorists are modifying their driving behaviours to save money on the cost of running their cars.

Nearly half of motorists are using smoother driving methods such as being less heavy on the accelerator peddle.  Smoother acceleration and breaking increases fuel efficiency.

Apparently a third of motorists are checking the air pressures in their tyres to ensure that they are pumped up correctly.  A further third turn their air conditioning off when driving, the research has found.

Whereas these strategies can reduce motoring costs, ibuyeco found that only one in ten have considered reducing the cover provided by the car insurance.  Only 12% of that group actually went on to reduce the costs of their insurance.

Cuts are being made in additional items such as motor legal protection cover and fewer motorists are taking out breakdown cover, which leads Lucy Bailey, Senior Marketing Manager at Ibuyeco to comment:

“While the nation is trying to save on expense in these tough times sometimes cutting back on extras such as breakdown cover can be a false economy.  A few pounds saved on the extras could cost as much as £277 for a truck to tow you and your car home.”

Many motorists are not making any adjustments to their driving style, however, and this group would benefit from fuel efficiency savings if they followed the example of the more savvy drivers.

Finding the right insurance cover at the best price can be achieved by using a car insurance comparison web site such as Go Compare.  When coupled with a careful driving style, motorists may well see considerable savings in their motoring costs.
