Car insurance problems if you are convicted of drink driving

With Christmas coming up and the temptation even stronger to have a drink, you could face serious consequences, not least car insurance problems and you could become uninsurable.
Drink driving not only risks your own safety but so too that of others around you, other people in the car, other road users and pedestrians.
A drink drive conviction under the DR10 penalty can really hit the cost of your car insurance and in some cases could almost double it.
According to research by moneysupermarket.com, drivers convicted of drink driving could see their premiums rise from an average £300 per year to £578 per year, a huge £278 difference.
Check the best car insurance for your needs using a car insurance comparison website such as that offered by Confused.com, Gocompare.com or Comparethemarket.com.
Whilst some insurers will still provide cover at a much higher cost, otheres won’t even provide you with a car insurance quote and will not be willing to provide you with cover.
A recent survey carried out by the Home Office shows that over 10% over drivers admitted to having driven after drinking what they believed was an ‘over the limit’ amount of alcohol.
As Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, says ‘On top of a massive hike in insurance premium costs, any convicted motorist is likely to find themselves with the difficult task of trying to find a provider who is prepared to insure someone with a drink driving conviction.
What’s more, a conviction could lead to a £1,000 fine, a 12 month driving ban on their licence and even a possible prison sentence. It is simply not worth taking the risk – the results of doing so can be costly and very damaging.’
If you need to buy car insurance, if you get quotes from a car insurance comparison website you can compare what’s on offer and get the best cover to meet you needs at the best price.
