Whilst 20% of drivers would consider car insurance fronting to save money, it is actually illegal and insurers classify it as fraud.
Fronting car insurance is when the main car driver falsely tells the car insurance provider that another person is the main driver.
Fronting is particularly common when parents front the car insurance for their child.
In this case, the parents take out the car insurance in their name and add the child as a second driver, even though it is the child who will be the main car driver.
Car insurance, particularly for a young driver, can be very expensive. By the parent fronting it the premium to be paid is likely to be a lot less, based on their good no-claims history.
According to moneysupermarket.com, 31% of motorists wrongly think fronting is legal and 35% don’t know whether it is legal or not.
Head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, Steve Sweeney, said ‘Fronting is illegal and will be classified as fraud by an insurer. Those considering lying to their insurer to save money are playing a very risky game. A motorist claiming to be the main driver – when this isn’t the case – is a dangerous move.’
He added ‘It may save you some money but if caught, your insurance will be invalidated and a younger driver could face court, charged with driving without insurance.’
On a positive not, 22% of motorists do know that fronting car insurance is illegal and would not risk doing it.
A key way of getting the best car insurance, whether a young driver or not, is to use a car insurance comparison website.
There are so many car insurance providers competing for business that it can be difficult to assess what’s best for you. The comparison websites help with this, providing an easy and quick way to get a number of car insurance quotes, from which you can then select the one for you.
Car insurance comparison websites include moneysupermarket.com, and others such as Confused.com, Gocompare.com and even the supermarkets are getting involved with Tescocompare.com for example.

I fully appreciate that fronting is illegal but when young drivers are getting quotes of £6000 for third party on a car worth £750 with a 1.2 engine who can blame people.
