Car insurance costs increase for ‘go-fast’ extras

Young drivers see their car insurance costs rise significantly for those ‘go-fast’ extras.
Adding the extras on a Ford Focus 1.6 can add a staggering £6,225 to the car insurance costs – for side skirts, tinted windows, flared wheel arches and wings and exhaust system changes.
According to research from uSwitch, buying the sporty version of cars can double the cost of the car insurance policy.
Comprehensive car insurance for an 18 year old for a Peugeot 206 costs just over £4,600 but for the Peugeot 206 GTi, the sporty version, it goes up amazingly to over £11,000.
In this case the insurance is equivalent to over 220% of the total value of the car!
Young drivers represent 7% of the car insurance market but foot 32% of the UK annual car insurance bill.
Significantly though, young drivers account for 34% of dangerous driving offences and a high proportion of those killed or seriously injured on the road.
To reduce their car insurance costs, young drivers can take the Pass Plus driving test.
Also, young drivers who do not make claims will find their premiums fall dramatically.
As with any insurance it is best to shop around to get the best deal.
Getting quotes from car insurance comparison websites, like uSwitch, Gocompare and Confused can be very helpful, enabling you to see quickly and easily the best insurance to meet your needs.
