If you’re planning to travel by car in Europe for their summer holidays be warned that car accidents can be costly so make sure you have the right car insurance, just in case!
According to Aviva (the new name for Norwich Union), Germany and France are the most expensive places in Europe to have a motorway accident.
A crash in Germany will set you back nearly £3,000 on average, over 50% higher than elsewhere in Europe.
Be careful of French drivers too as the average personal injury claim is nearly £10,000.
It is very important therefore to get car insurance that provides an appropriate level of cover.
Aviva’s UK insurance motor underwriting manager, Nigel Bartram, commented ‘An estimated 2 million British tourists take to their cars for driving trips to neighbouring European Union countries each year.’
Bartram added ‘we advise you to make sure that you are properly covered before you go. Otherwise you may have to pay for any claims for damage to your car, whether it’s your fault or not. Not to mention the hassle of arranging repair and sorting out the claim in the local language.’
Not only do you need to get car insurance though, you need to be aware of local rules and regulations, including
- Visibility vests are compulsory in France, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Norway and are likely to become compulsory throughout the EU
- Drink driving laws are stricter with the blood alcohol level being 0.5mg/ml instead of 0.8mg/ml in the UK.
- Emergency services can be reached on 112 across Europe
- In Switzerland, pedestrians have right of way and will expect you to stop for them.
Aviva’s UK insurance business is the largest general insurer in the UK with a market share of around 15%. It is focused on providing insurance for individuals and small businesses.
