It’s not just cash and jewellery that burglars are after, as the recession hits, white goods and small kitchen appliances are also being targetted – but hiding a tumble dryer under the mattress is a bit tricky!
According to Direct Line, burglars have turned to stealing mundane kitchen appliances, including white goods and small items such as toasters and kettles.
In just 6 months they had home insurance claims for some 50 vacuum cleaners, 26 microwaves, 16 toasters, 15 kettles, 13 tumble dryers and 10 fridges and 6 dshwashers.
With a more unusual taste were the burglars who stole 3 electric toothbrushes, 2 epilators and 1 beard trimmer.
Laptops, TVs and digital cameras also being claimed for in their thousands. It is therefore vital that householders have security measures in place to provide protection and that they couple this with the best home insurance to cover their needs should they be the unfortunate victim of a burglary.
Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, said ‘Where most people would go to the likes of Argos or John Lewis to fit out our homes with basic appliances, thieves seem to be using the recession to do their shopping on other peoples’ homes. While it can be heart-breaking to have a family heirloom or special piece of jewellery stolen, it can also be annoying to have your kettle or tumble dryer go missing.’
Ensuring you have good security measures in place for your home is vital, to protect as best you can all your property.
Be aware how much cash you have in your home as most home insurance policies will only cover a small amount of cash kept there. Wherever possible it’s also best to keep valuables locked in a safe.
