New research has revealed that accidents in the home cost people in the UK over £1 billion every year, highlighting the importance of comprehensive insurance.
Figures from Tescocompare.com showed that there are more than five million accidents in UK homes every year and that these cost a total of £1.35 billion worth of damage.
According to the data, the most common accidents involve damaging carpets, curtains and furniture through spillages. In fact, 35 per cent of homeowners said they had experienced this sort of mishap in the last five years.
What''s more, the research showed that the average cost of damage to the home as a result of these accidents is £267.
"As the saying goes accidents do happen – and this research suggests many of us suffer financial loses on an annual basis," commented Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com.

Recently, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) revealed that it was set to launch a new campaign to widen access to home contents insurance for people in the north-east.
James King, the ABI''s assistant director of markets and regulation, explained: "For people on low incomes, buying insurance is sometimes not a priority. However, it is often the most vulnerable who can benefit the most from insurance."
