Couples planning to tie the knot abroad have been urged to take out wedding insurance by the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba).

Research by First Choice shows that 57 per cent of couples would consider getting hitched abroad, which can cost up to six times less than a wedding in the UK.

Getting married in the UK can cost up to £11,000, compared to just an average of £520 per person for couples that choose to have their big day overseas.

However, Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for Biba, suggested that couples take out wedding insurance in either case to avoid losing out if things don''t go to plan.

He said: "Wedding insurance is important as the cost does rise. Like all insurance the individuals getting married should sit down and look at the risks they face.

"They should then evaluate that exposure to estimate the cost. If they feel that insurance is the best option of transferring that exposure then they should contact a broker to assist them."
