An industry expert has stressed that holiday and wedding insurance are very different things and urged couples planning on tying the knot aboard to make sure they are adequately covered.
Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba), explained that the unreliable weather in the UK and the rising costs of hold a ceremony in the country were encouraging more and more couples to think about getting hitched overseas.
He added that the rise of low-cost airlines had also helped to make overseas ceremonies more popular.
However, Mr Staddon urged couples to take the time to sort out insurance before jetting off for the big day.
He explained that a holiday involving a wedding was "different" from a normal vacation, meaning that it needed different insurance.
"Holiday insurance is that - holiday. A wedding is different and, as such, brings with it other problems, the dress, the rings, the wedding refinery," the insurance expert explained.
Mr Staddon added that most insurance policies would put a limit on the value of the gifts that would be covered. He said that it therefore made more sense for the guests to give gifts when the couple returned home.
"There is no real need to carry the present out to the ceremony and then for somebody else to carry it back," he concluded.
