People from the UK considering retiring to the sun should carefully consider health insurance, an industry expert has said.
Shelter Offshore''s director, Rhiannon Davies, said that even with recent changes to rules about healthcare provision in Spain and France, retirees can still generally get access to free medical treatment.
However, the expert said that this was not the case in other popular retirement destinations, such as Cyprus and Turkey.
"To ensure one can afford any and all care and treatment potentially necessary, it really is worth looking into health insurance if you are unsure about the level of care you will be entitled to in your preferred destination of choice," she explained.
"If you move to live abroad and cut all ties with the UK, don''t automatically assume you can always fall back on the good old NHS."
Earlier this year, HiFX reported that Australia and New Zealand remained the most popular destinations for people from the UK looking to retire overseas.
At the time, Mark Bodega, the firm''s director, commented: "Making the decision to move to a new country is a big undertaking, both emotionally and financially."

What should be at the top of the checklist of things to look for in a new location? Medical Facilities! As the author of two editions of Where To Retire In Australia, we can say the medical facilities in Australia range from excellent to so, so. Some rural areas have problems attracting AND retaining doctors (and dentists). Please research carefully before moving.
