If you’ve considered switching energy tariffs to save money, you’ll know how much choice there is out there. We take a look at one of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers, British Gas, to find out which of its tariffs are the most popular – and why.

British Gas TariffsFlexible, Green, Online, Fixed – with so many choices on offer, comparing energy tariffs can be exhausting.

So why not make it easier for yourself and follow our regular guide to the most popular tariffs on offer from the ‘Big 6’ energy suppliers?

This week, we look at British Gas. We’ll show you the benefits on offer from the company’s most popular energy tariffs – and how you can save money by switching.

And remember: whichever tariff you choose, you will qualify for a £15 dual fuel discount and up to a £67 discount if you pay by direct debit.

The British Gas Standard tariff

If you don’t want to be tied in to a lengthy contract but still want access to competitive rates on gas and electricity, the Standard energy tariff is for you.

You won’t be charged a cancellation fee if you decide to switch tariffs or suppliers and you also qualify for a free EnergySmart package – a bundle of products and services that help you monitor and reduce your energy usage and costs.

The online tariffs

British Gas’s new WebSaver 12 and OnlineSaver 4 bring energy tariffs online and into the 21st century – and they’re quickly gaining customers.

WebSaver 12

This is British Gas’s cheapest available tariff.

With the WebSaver tariff, your whole account can be managed online. This saves British Gas administrative costs and they can pass on their savings to you. Paper bills also become a thing of the past, so you’ll save a few trees in the process.

However, you will have to pay a £30 cancellation fee if you decide to switch tariffs or close the account and you must pay by direct debit.

OnlineSaver 4

Second only to the WebSaver 12 on price, the OnlineSaver 4 guarantees a 4% discount on the Standard tariff until 31st October 2012, the EnergySmart package is included as standard and there’s no cancellation fee – giving you maximum flexibility.

The energyshare tariff

This is British Gas’s green energy tariff. For the same price as the Standard tariff, British Gas ensures that the energy you use is matched with British renewable energy sources.

In addition to promoting renewable energy, British Gas will give you a free energy-saving gadget of your choice and donate £10 every year to the energyshare fund to support renewable energy community projects.

Paperless billing and online account management all add towards making this one of the greenest energy tariffs around, and all payments are made using direct debit.

The Fixed Price June 2012 tariff

If rising and falling energy prices keep you up at night, get peace of mind by fixing your energy costs until the end of June 2012.

The Fixed Price June 2012 tariff fixes your energy costs at 19% above the Standard tariff rate for the next year, helping you plan your budget and avoid paying more due to sudden spikes in energy prices. It could result in significant savings if energy prices are pushed up 20% or more in the coming months.

Additional benefits

Online account management is available for Standard and Fixed Price tariffs and mandatory for the online and green tariffs, allowing you to monitor your bills easily.

While British Gas does offer a Prepaid tariff, it’s also more expensive and you can’t pay by direct debit – so you lose that discount. It’s hard to think of ways you can save money by paying in advance.

And remember – energy tariffs shouldn’t be judged by popularity alone. With prices fluctuating and more tariffs being introduced, it’s still important to compare prices from the ‘Big Six’ and other suppliers to find the best energy deals in town.

A good place to start is at price comparison sites like Moneysupermarket.com and uSwitch.com – they could help save money now and for years to come.
