As Scottish Power Raise Energy Prices Is It Time To Get A Fixed Energy Plan?

Scottish Power have announced a massive increase in their gas and electricity prices, to take effect 1 August 2011. Is it time to switch to a fixed energy plan?
An increase in energy prices has been anticipated for some time so it’s no real surprise to see Scottish Power heading the pack of the ‘Big 6′ energy suppliers with their 19% rise in gas prices and 10% rise in electricity prices.
Raymond Jack, Scottish Power’s UK retail director, said: “Wholesale prices for gas and electricity have increased significantly since the end of last year, and continuing unrest in global energy markets means future prices are volatile.
We understand times are difficult for many people, and we have done what we can to absorb these additional costs for as long as possible to minimise the impact on our customers.”
Scott Byrom, energy channel manager at moneysupermarket.com said: “Now really is the time to get on to the best priced energy tariff for your usage level and area you live. The cheapest online energy tariff is currently Online Saver 10 offered by EDF Energy with average annual bills of £940*.
Bearing in mind historical energy market price rises, it’s highly likely the other energy providers will follow suit. In the face of rising prices, opting for the market leading fixed product Fix Saver v2, from EDF Energy with average bills of £1,009 is the best way to safeguard against further price increases from the energy giants.”

MoneyHighStreet.com comments: “This is a steep rise in energy prices from Scottish Power. In our mind there’s no doubt other suppliers will soon follow suit. It’s therefore well worth considering your options and looking at switching energy supplier to get a plan that’s either fixed or capped.
“Not only that it’s important to look for ways to use less energy, making your home more energy efficient.
“To help with this, British Gas for example are currently offering to install free loft or cavity wall insulation to all their existing customers.
They also have a £400 bolier scrappage discount if you book to have a quote before 30 June 2011. Their Heating Advisor will complete a FREE energy efficiency assessment of your home, advising you on ways you may be able to reduce energy consumption and save money.”
