Online Energy Costs Creeping Upwards As Winter Approaches

All of the big six energy suppliers have now replaced highly competitive online plans with more expensive versions and the differences between the cheapest and most expensive online energy deals is widening.
Just in time for the cold winter months, which are fast approaching, online energy tariffs are becoming more expensive as all of the big six energy suppliers have withdrawn their cheapest energy deals and replaced them with more expensive plans. This makes it more important to consider switching to a cheaper energy plan before prices rise further.
Price comparison site, uSwitch is also warning that there is now almost a £100 difference between the cheapest – npower’s Sign Online 19 with an annual bill of £890 – and the most expensive – SSE’s Go Direct 5 with an annual bill of £984 – online tariff.
With no guarantee of how long the npower deal will be available, consumers are being urged to sign up in time for winter before the window of opportunity is snapped shut.
Although more than 3.5 million customers switched to online energy plans during the last year, 87% of households are still subscribing to less competitively priced tariffs which is costing UK householders millions in lost cost savings.
“Online energy plans are consistently the most competitive in the market, only recently coming in at around £300 a year cheaper than standard plans. But with suppliers gradually pushing their online prices up we are starting to see the difference shrink.
Online plans will continue to be more competitive, but the saving will not be quite as pronounced. With winter fast approaching I would urge households to take action to secure one of these lower cost deals now before the window of opportunity closes.”, advises Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com.
