Both E.ON and ScottishPower pulled their most competitive tariffs from the market this week.
The action by these suppliers means that ScottishPower’s most competitive online energy plan has risen by £53 and E.ON’s by £59.
The British Gas WebSaver 11 plan still has its price at a market-leading £895 a year, the only supplier to keep below the £900 mark. The concern though is that as other suppliers push their online prices up, British Gas could follow suit, hence households are being encouraged to take action today.
Emma Bush, energy expert at uSwitch.com, says: “Online energy prices are steadily creeping upwards as a direct result of the current volatility in the wholesale energy market. It is important to remember the best buy plans are only being withdrawn for new customers, so those who had the foresight to sign up while the going was good will see their competitive price preserved at least for the time being.
“The important thing to remember is that there are still some competitive plans out there, but there is clearly now no guarantee that they will be around for long. We really would urge consumers to see this as a last call and to sign up to one now before they too disappear.”
According to uSwith.com the following are the current energy prices based on a medium user consuming 3,300kWh of electricity and 16,500 kWh of gas, paying by direct debit with bill sizes average across all regions.
| Supplier | Plan Name | Price |
| British Gas | WebSaver 11 | £895 |
| npower | Go Fix 5 | £960 |
| E.ON | Save Online V7 | £965 |
| EDF Energy | Online S@ver 12 | £966 |
| ScottishPower | Online Energy Saver 14 | £969 |
| SSE | Atlantic Dual Fuel Domestic Standard Online Nil Service Charge | £987 |
| Average | £957 |
MoneyHighStreet.com comment: As well as making sure you get the best energy plan to suit your needs, make sure too that your energy bills are correct. According to recent research almost 30% of households have been wrongly billed by their energy supplier in the last couple of years – a staggering percentage.
