With nearly 100 different tariffs available for gas and electricity from the big six energy suppliers, BACS is reminding customers that energy bills can be reduced by paying by Direct Debit.

Gas FlamesThere is a bewildering number of tariffs available for energy customers including eco friendly, fixed price, dual fuel and online saver options, however BACS, the organisation behind Direct Debit, is reminding customers that some of the best deals are available when paying via Direct Debit.

“Nearly a third of the tariffs offer a cheaper deal if payment is made by Direct Debit, advises Graham Callaghan, Bacs energy sector manager.

Although almost four out of five households pay for their gas and electricity by Direct Debit, there are still around five million households that could be benefiting from using this payment method.

With a greater focus on energy costs and usage as part of the the Climate Change and Energy Policy, the Government now encourages energy companies to inform customers whether they are on the cheapest tariff and how much they can save if they are not. It also requires every energy company to offer special low rates for electricity and gas to vulnerable households.

However it is still up to the consumer to find the best deals by switching energy supplier and then using the best payment method such as Direct Debit.
