E.ON is cutting its gas prices by 6%, a move that follows that of British Gas just over a month ago and that of Scottish and Southern last week.
The cut in gas prices by E.ON will benefit just under 2 million customers and will take effect from 31 March.
The cut will reduce E.ON’s average annual dual fuel bill from £1,232 to £1,185 and direct debit customers will see a £42 saving.
According to uSwitch, the average annual household energy bills* from the main energy suppliers on the standard plan after today’s announcement are
- British Gas – £1,158
- EDF Energy – £1,189
- E.ON – £1,185
- npower – £1,256
- Scottish and Southern Energy – £1,162
- Scottish Power – £1,362
Giving an average energy bill of £1,219
Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch said “Now that three of the big six have moved we can also see a clear trend emerging with gas price cuts coming in at around 5% or £40. This will not make up the ground lost two years ago when suppliers increased prices by 42% or £381 and we now expect household energy bills to end up around £270 higher than two years ago putting even more emphasis on the need for consumers to start managing their energy costs.
“Key to this is to make sure we pay the lowest possible price for our energy and learn to use less of it. Importantly, online energy plans currently cost around £300 a year less than suppliers’ standard plans, offering households a real opportunity to take their energy bills back to pre-2008 levels.”
The point about online pay monthly energy tariffs being cheaper is echoed by Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket, who says “The good news is that “online pay monthly” tariffs are still almost £300 cheaper per year than the standard quarterly tariffs. Effectively, this is an immediate 25 per cent price cut to your annual bills.
While for many customers switching to a new provider is the best option, at the very least customers should contact their current provider and ask to move to its cheapest tariff.”
Switching energy provider really is easy, easier than you might think, and can save you money.
