Doorstep energy selling is now not so easy as a new ruling means anyone knocking on your door trying to get you to switch energy provider must provide you with a written quote before the switch can happen.

Switch energy providerBefore this rule came in, many consumers confronted with a slick energy salesman on their doorstep took the verbal promise of the cheapest energy and agreed to swich energy provider. The switch was made even though there was no way of the customer being able to tell if they really were moving to the cheapest plan for their needs.

Signing up to an online energy tariff is invariably the cheapest option. With a quote from a salesman you can at least then compare energy providers to find the best deal for your region and taking into your specific needs.

According to Ofgem, over 50% of consumers switch energy providers because a salesman has approached them and many of these make the switch because of the promise of cheaper gas and electricity.

As Scott Byrom of moneysupermarket.com comments “It’s a very positive change and will help rebuild trust in door-to-door activity…

“Customers can quite easily check the quote on a price comparison site or suppliers own site and, by doing so, check other deals available on the market before making a decision. If they do switch on the doorstep, the quote can help ensure they get the right prices when their account goes live.”

Switching energy provider really is easy, easier than you might at first think and you really can make significant savings.
