Electricity PylonBritish Gas will be increasing its prices for gas and electricity by 7% from tomorrow, the 10th December.

The increases in energy costs from British Gas will mean that gas bills will rise by £52 per year and £28 will be added to the annual cost of electricity, bringing the annual energy bill for the average household to £1,237.

These price rises in the standard and variable tariffs will affect around 8 million customers and come at a time when the UK has been experiencing some of the worst winter weather for many years.

“British Gas is the third major energy supplier to increase prices in the run-up to Christmas. These hikes are not only hitting customers in the winter when energy usage is at a high, but are also hitting our bills during a particularly severe cold snap.”

“This double whammy means that many households will find themselves turning the heating down or even off. In this cold weather it is simply unacceptable that energy prices could be forcing people to compromise on their well-being in this way.”, says Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com.

Looking for the best energy offers is important, particularly as wholesale energy prices are set to rise further. “The average saving by changing from the average standard deal to the best priced product on the market is £208.“, advises Scott Byrom, energy manager at moneysupermarket.com.

“Consumers who are worried about their bills this winter should be taking action now.”, Anne Robinson comments.
