British Gas and SSE have followed other energy suppliers cutting prices which will help reduce energy bills for more consumers.

Energy PricesBritish Gas has cut its electricity prices by 5% with immediate effect, giving an average saving of £26.

This means the average British Gas dual fuel bill will drop to £1,260.

As Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, comments: “Although British Gas customers will feel the benefit immediately, many will feel disappointed that they won’t see their gas bills decrease – especially with temperatures expected to drop.

“We hope that this will be just the first cut, and that further reductions will follow.

“However, this cut will go nowhere near cancelling out the £224 or 21% hike in prices in the last 18 months.”

SSE is cutting its gas prices by 4.5% or £28 effective from 28 March. This means the average household bull for a dual SSE customer will drop to £1,237.

MoneyHighStreet comments: “Clearly with energy suppliers following one another with price cuts it is good news for consumers. However, the issue remains that the cuts will not cancel out the increases levied in the last 18 months.

“Ensuring you are on the best energy deal to suit your needs is important, switching supplier if need be, but there are also other ways to help save on your energy bills.

“Steps you can take include to insulate your loft, add cavity wall insulation, lower your washing machine temperature, turn appliances off, turn your heating down by 1 degree, switch off lights and even only filling your kettle with as much water as you need can help.”

According to uSwitch, the best energy deals, based on a medium user consuming 3,300 kWh of electricity and 16,500 kWh of gas with bill sizes averaged across all regions, are:
