Road rage following an argument with a spouse or partner has contributed to almost 2.5 million accidents on British roads, More Than car insurance reports. They also have tips on how to avoid romantic road rage.

More Than Car InsuranceTiger Woods smashing his car into a tree after a fight with his wife has shone a spotlight onto the problems that can be caused by “romantic road rage”. Research by More Than shows that Tiger Woods is not alone with having to deal with an accident following a tiff with his wife – nearly 2.5 million prangs and accidents have been caused by poor driving after a domestic argument.

More Than have developed a scoring system to assess the risks of romantic road rage. Units are allocated based on the severity of the dispute units so a person subjected to silent treatment by the partner would be assessed at two units of risk, whereas a blazing row would be awarded 12 units.

The car insurance company is advising drivers to have a cool down period after a domestic dispute before taking to the wheel, particularly as the research found that 36% of those surveyed said they pay far less attention to the roads after a row while another 19% admitted to driving erratically following a lovers’ tiff.

More Than recommend that drivers take at least an hour to cool down, although they recognise that this isn’t always possible. This cooling off period allows physical and emotional stress levels to fall and gives the person sufficient time to regain their concentration for driving safely.
