The number of motorists now ‘swapping’ licence penalty points is on the rise but it’s illegal and can lead to prosecution.

Car InsuranceAccording to Swinton, a leading car insurance company, some 2% of drivers have managed to persuade partners to take the blame for a driving offence so that they can keep the penalty points off their own licence.

This is an increase on the 1.5% of drivers who admitted to this penalty point ‘swapping’ in a survey taken 3 years ago.

Amazingly, 7% of Londoners admit to swapping points and 4% of those aged between 18-35 have engaged in doing so.

A spokesperson for Swinton said “Motorists are increasingly risking perverting the course of justice in order to maintain a clean licence, as well as to avoid a driving ban.

“However, trying to escape convictions by swapping points with another person is illegal and can lead to prosecution. Quite simply, it is not worth the risk.”

Car insurance is a legal requirement. All drivers in the UK must be insured and driving a vehicle that you are not insured to drive is a criminal offence.

As well as getting car insurance quotes through such as Swinton, you can compare car insurance quotes using services provided by such as Quotezone, Gocompare and Confused.com.
