More than a third of young adults would rather date someone who owns a car, however they have to be able to afford the car insurance first.

Mini CarFor young adults owning a car is likely to boost their chances of dating as 34% of people in the 17 – 25 age said that they find car owners who can drive more sexy.

Luckily for impecunious youngsters, it seems that the type of car is less important than the fact that they actually own their own wheels.

There is a downside to this research findings from Confused.com, however. 65% of those who responded to the survey stated that they thought that choosing a date because they have a car was “really shallow”.

There is another problem for young car owners – they have to be able to afford the costs of their car insurance. Some youngsters have been quoted premiums of £4000 per year.

There are savings to be made to reduce the cost of car insurance, as Gareth Kloet, Head of Car Insurance at Confused.com explains:

“The cost of insurance shouldn’t stand in the way of [car ownership]. 50% of under 25s could save up to £571 on car insurance by shopping around on Confused.com, leaving them more money to wine and dine a partner.”

MoneyHighStreet.com Comments: It is interesting that so many youngsters are attracted to those who can own and drive, although Confused.com also found that 18% of young men think that their sex lives will be better by owning a car, whereas only 9% of women thought this. Oops!

Another thought is that if 50% of under 25s can save £571 per year for their car insurance, it shows how expensive their car insurance actually is. In fact it is the cost of car insurance, rather than the cost of the car that is the main barrier to car ownership for this age agroup.
