Mobile broadband usage is booming in the UK the latest Internet Access survey from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows.

Samsung Galaxy S mobile broadbandIn its latest survey of Internet access of households and individuals, the ONS is reporting a huge growth in the number of users who use their phones and other mobile devices to access the Internet.

Forty five percent of Internet users now connect to the web from their mobile phone, smart phone, or similar device, which is up from the 40% of users in 2009.

Use of laptops and 3G mobile broadband dongles is also increasing, in part due to the competitive prices of mobile broadband packages.

The mobile phone is the most popular way of accessing the Internet whilst out and about with 21 percent of users connecting this way. It appears to be the 16 to 24 years old age group who are most prevalent in mobile phone web access.

In contrast most (60%) of those aged over 65 have never used the Internet at all. Surprisingly a total of 9.2 million adults have yet to experience Internet usage, given the large number of households (72%) that are connected to the web.

The Internet is clearly having an impact on society as 30.1 million adults use the Internet every day, or nearly every day, which is almost double the estimate in 2006.
