Insulating your loft is one of the best ways of saving on heating costs. One of the DIY superstores is selling Knauf Space Blanket loft insulation for half price, so now is a great time to make your home as energy efficient as possible.

I have often written about the benefits of insulating your loft properly. Modern loft insulation is very easy to lay as it is encapsulated and therefore itch free. Once laid, you instantly benefit from a warmer home and will reduce your heating costs, year after year.

I rate Knauf space blanket loft insulation very highly as it is so quick and easy to install. You can often find it on special offer deals, particularly during the summer months when there is less demand.

Update: 10 January 2010Homebase have got the Space Blanket Loft Insualation at 1/2 price:

  • 200mm – now £5.74, down from £11.48
  • 150mm – now £3.98, down from £7.96
  • 100mm – now £4.99, down from £9.98

I noticed that Wickes are currently selling Knauf Space blanket loft insulation on a buy one, get one free deal. This reduces the cost of each roll to £7, which is an excellent price, and should pay for itself in one year of saved heating costs, particularly when you consider that gas prices will rise by 40% in the next 12 months.

You have to buy this insulation from the store, not online, however I strongly recommend that you take advantage of this great deal before it ends on 9th August.

So check your loft now. If it hasn’t got at least 8″ of insulation then seriously consider loading your car up with the half price insulation at Wickes, while you can.

The one thing to watch out for with Space blanket type products is their relative expense compare to conventional products. You will find that they cover a relatively small area compared to the more traditional Knauf range; Knauf have recently started making their conventional Loft Roll 44 with something they call Ecose technology; to you or I this means it is an itch free product, and contains no formaldehyde or phenols as binding agents. It also covers a significantly larger area of your loft for something that is not much more expensive than the encapsulated products. The 100mm thick Space blanket covers an area of around 3m2 whereas the Loft Roll 44 product covers an area just shy of 14m2 – the difference in price between these two products is £5-£10 a roll; depending on how much you have to do buying the larger un-encapsulated product can prove worthwhile. It is worth noting you should still wear a breathing mask when installing the uncovered product as a precaution.
