I was just doing some ‘quality online research’ whilst slurping a cup of tea when I found this news item in the Mail Online – ‘Enjoy your cat-poo-chino! Coffee shop serving drink made from beans that have passed through civet cat… at £9 a cup’ – I thought nearer £2 for a cup of coffee was a lot, this must be something else!
Apparently, according to the Mail article, Kopi Luwak or Civet coffee is one of the trendiest beverages around. The coffee costs up to £300 per pound and locals in Indonesia pick the ‘coffee beans’ from the faeces of an Asian civet cat. The cat eats the ripe coffee beans as part of their diet and then nature takes its course.
The drink is available from the Birmingham-based Urban Coffee Company, and it’s supposedly really helping to boost their business. I assume it’s available elsewhere – if anyone knows where do post a comment to us all know, in case Birmingham is a tad too far to go for a coffee, albeit such a grand cup.
Interesting that this business was established during the recession and whilst most are trying to save money and looking out for special offers, it’s clearly succeeding in tempting some at least to spend on a little luxury.
Good for them! Oh, and in case you’re interested, Weasel Coffee could soon be on the menu too – yes you’ve guessed, it’s made with beans regurgitated from the weasel. Look out for it, it’s due to be launched later this year.
